Procedure to Correct Over-Bite
Lower Jaw Surgery
-
Braces are put on first
-
When the teeth are aligned, you are ready for jaw surgery
-
Lower jaw surgery is done inside mouth without outside scars.
-
The surgery moves the teeth of the lower jaw forward.
-
Titanium plates are used to hold the bone together until it heals.
-
We never wire the jaw closed.
-
Braces are continued after surgery
Please note that the sensory nerve (yellow) of the lower jaw is buried in the bone. The bone must be sectioned and there is a real risk of an unintended injury of the nerve. It may take a year to recover, and then 30% of the patients will have permanent numbness. But it does not affect function and many patients do not even notice the deficit.
